The basic version is a scope of functions for easy diagnostics, whereas the professional version contains several applications for instance for live data diagnostics during operation, calibration adjustment of electronic components in cars etc.
There is no problem if you want to use it just for fun. However, if you want to charge money for your work using it you have to obtain a license from Volkswagen AG.
What does it cost? Licenses can be obtained from book distributors or directly from Volkswagen AG in Germany. From the book distributors you can buy a license for one workstation. All releases after version 2.0.0.1 require a valid USB key, which cost about 40 Euro and can be bought from VAG customer support (see below). The latest version is 4.2.1 and it is able to diagnose cars from 2002 onwards. Updating requires access to the internet and costs around 150 Euros (including USB key). Updating will also delete any previously entered data. Latest versions can be downloaded directly from the VAG-COM website (free of charge, registration required). The older versions are no longer available for download. Such older versions can be found on the web or owned by users. It is strongly recommended that you do not use such old versions because they could infringe on the copyright of Volkswagen AG.
